Brown pelicans are highly social, living in flocks of young and old together throughout much of the year. They are known for their huge suspended pouch which acts as a dip net when the pelican fishes. Brown pelicans have been threatened by the use of "hard" pesticides, such as DDT, which soften the egg shell that may then be easily crushed by the parents as they nest.
